Racing (Wetapunga)
The Weta 4.4 is a one design class which is now developing its racing following worldwide. The term 'Wetapunga' has been associated with Weta racing since the inaugural Weta 4.4 nationals were held at Lake Taupo in New Zealand in December 2007. Wetapunga is the world's largest insect and Weta 4.4's namesake.
The Weta delivers the performance of a multihull together with exceptional agility and windward performance. Its versatility is also a bonus - easily manoevred and towed to nationwide events, great for coastal waters with a category C CE-rating and wave piercing hulls, it is easily sailed single-handed in light to moderate winds and two up will still be providing a thrill when most other multihull competitors are heading for shore or struggling to stay up-right.
The Weta aims to make sailing inclusive to the widest of audiences. To this end its rig is simplicity itself with intuitive ease of handling which can be enjoyed without the requirement for extreme strength or fitness levels. It is very forgiving of mistakes, yet still provides sufficient adjustability to reward expertise. Its stability is also a bonus which allows novices to rapidly gain confidence to take part and is proving to be popular with disabled communities in allowing them to at last access mixed ability racing on a level playing field.
